It is about time. The connection between the abuse of animals and abuse of humans has been known about for a very long time.

It won’t catch every twisted killer but it will help law enforcement keep an eye on the soon to be killers.

FBI studies show that serial killers like Dahmer impaled the heads of dogs, frogs and cats on sticks; David Berkowitz, known as the “Son of Sam,” poisoned his mother’s parakeet; and Albert DeSalvo, aka the “Boston Strangler,” trapped cats and dogs in wooden crates and killed them by shooting arrows through the boxes.

20th anniversary of John Wayne Gacy’s death

It’s been 20 years since John Wayne Gacy was put down, I hope that it has been 20 years of suffering.

There is an interesting article about him here.

Chicago’s most notorious serial killer was put to death at Stateville Correctional Center twenty years ago today. One of his Death Row attorneys still feels the way in which her life and career were altered by him and recalls just what a sick, twisted, and funny son of a bitch John Wayne Gacy was.

Like the time Gacy noted he didn’t enjoy movies like most people—he rooted for the bad guys.

One of the things that makes many serial killers so dangerous is that they know how to get you to like them.

Once when Gacy called their home, Joe Conti answered. “You should request strawberries for your last meal, John, you know why?’’

“No, Joe, why?’’ replied Gacy, happy to play along.

“Because they’re out of season.’’

Yet even a father whose profession is humor can’t prepare you for the comedic stylings of John Wayne Gacy.

Like the joke in which Adamski’s sister died and Gacy sent a card with a sensitive and tender message on the front. Inside was a picture of a naked woman in a casket with her legs spread wide. The caption: “We wanted to remember her in death as she was in life.’’

I have to say that IMO joking about a last  meal and a dead sister is different. Both messed up but…..

By the time Gacy lay lifeless from lethal injection, Conti and Adamski had invested more than $400,000 in billable hours (adjusted for inflation) and a good portion of their mental health.

How did they ever expect to collect? I am sure that they took this case for the experience not the money. They had to know that even if he did not get a death sentence he would still be locked up. The article also states that they offered to represent him again at a later time to try to over throw the DP. i really doubt that they ever expected payment, they just wanted to be the ones to represent him.

They were subjected to death threats (none of which were investigated, Conti notes). For years, an unknown man would send Conti disgusting pictures of mutilated bodies, and they were ostracized by people on both sides of the death penalty debate.

I have to wonder if the person that sent pictures was mad that they were representing Gacy. I think that is a sick way to express that but it is possible that there was no direct link to Gacy.

As Gacy’s execution approached he joked he would be at Adamski’s next birthday, a chronological impossibility. Conti got Gacy to record a birthday greeting and then put it on Adamski’s overnight messages the night before his 44th birthday.

“Hi ho, I told you I’d be at your birthday,’’ Gacy’s voice chirped brightly in Adamski’s ear, only moments after he awoke, but months after the execution.

That would not be funny.

48 Hours update on the Long Island unidentified serial killer

I am glad that there is new information and that the case has not been just let lie. I was worried that since Hurricane Sandy it was just going to lay unsolved.

Sadly there does not seem to be any new leads or information on the 4 girls found murdered in New Jersey. So close to this case.

Judge in ‘Grim Sleeper’ serial murder case OKs use of DNA

Rejecting defense arguments that a suspect in the slayings of 10 women and the attempted murder of an 11th had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the DNA he left on pizzeria plates and utensils, a California judge on Tuesday OK’d the evidence gathered by a police officer who posed as a restaurant busboy.

The ruling by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy helps clear the way for the case against Lonnie Franklin Jr. to proceed toward trial this summer, reports the Los Angeles Times. Franklin, who is about 60 years old, is being held without bail following his arrest in 2010.

The suspect in the case was nicknamed the “Grim Sleeper” because of a seeming years-long hiatus in slayings that took place over a period of over 20 years, according to authorities.

Although his DNA was not initially in a database available to law enforcement, investigators focused on Franklin as a suspect after asking the state to try to match DNA recovered at the crime scenes to individuals in the database who might be a relative of the suspect.

He is not even arguing that it is his DNA only that the cops obtained it the wrong way. I do not care how the cops got his DNA I am just happy that they finally took this bastard off the streets.

While supposed serial killer Israel Keyes did kill himself in his Anchorage jail cell last month, the FBI still needs the public’s help to build a narrative of his crimes.
Investigators believe Keyes killed at least eight people across the U.S., zig-zagging the country kidnapping victims, robbing them and killing some. TIME Magazine reported in December that investigators didn’t know about the string of crimes until Keyes told them.
His spree lasted from 2001 until February 2012.
As TIME writer Madison Gray detailed, Keyes kidnapped 18-year-old Samantha Koenig from a coffee shop in Anchorage on February 1 of last year. The FBI says he took her debit card and sent out a flurry of text messages with her phone so acquaintances wouldn’t think she was missing. He got her PIN number. The next day, he killed her.
Keyes flew to Houston and back to Anchorage, eventually finagling the deposit of ransom money into Koenig’s account, which he withdrew from banks in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas, as TIME reported.
In March of last year, a Lufkin highway patrolman spotted Keyes driving his Ford Focus and pulled it over, recognizing it from a security video. Keyes was arrested and extradited. He confessed –– then confessed to at least eight murders. There may be more: Staring down at a possible death sentence, Keyes cut his wrists and hanged himself in his jail cell.
FBI investigators have pieced together Keyes’ travels since. And between February 12 and February 16, Special Agent Diego Rodriguez says he was in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
He told police that he was in Azle, Aledo and Cleburne. And, at some point, his car got stuck in a “muddy, rural area.” Rodriguez wants to speak to anyone who may have helped Keyes with his car.
Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies are also helping the FBI. They will be posting flyers Thursday at gas stations and restaurants in Godley and Cresson. Johnson County is also hoping new leads might help them solve a murder that happened in their jurisdiction last February.
“You start wondering if they are tied to it, in any way or not,” said Lt. Tim Jones from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. “If they are to give closure to the family or not, eliminate them so we keep looking for the right person”.
During that same time period, Keyes may have also visited the Post Oak Cemetery in Glen Rose.

Authorities on Monday said they have arrested a 72-year-old man in connection with the slayings of three women in the late 1980s, alleging he is a serial killer who operated in Los Angeles as well as in Florida and the Gulf Coast region.

Samuel Little, 72, has been extradited to California from Kentucky, where he was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in early September on an unrelated criminal warrant, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Little was charged Monday by the L.A. County district attorney’s office with three murder counts and special circumstances for multiple murder. No immediate decision has been made whether to pursue the death penalty against Little.

LAPD Detectives Mitzi Roberts and Rick Jackson, who investigated the case, said there is DNA evidence linking Little to the Los Angeles slayings but would not elaborate, citing the ongoing investigation. The crimes are all sexually motivated strangulations, they said.

Police identified the Los Angeles victims as Carol Alford, 41, found dead on July 13, 1987; Audrey Nelson, 35, whose body was discovered Aug. 14, 1989; and Guadalupe Apodaca, 46, from Sept. 2, 1989. Their bodies were discovered in the Central Avenue-Alameda Street corridor, just south of downtown.

The bulk of Little’s arrests — which numbered in the dozens — were for crimes such as drunk driving, shoplifting and burglary; but detectives said he had a far more sinister side that included bursts of violence such as murders, robberies and assaults directed at those with “high-risk lifestyles” including prostitutes and substance abusers.

“It was theft by day and murder by night,” Jackson said of Little.

Little, also known as Samuel McDowell,” committed crimes in 24 states but served relatively little time in state prison or county jail, the detectives said. In the early 1980s, Little was accused of a two murders and two attempted murders in the Gainsesville, Fla., and Pascagoula, Miss., areas.

Little, at the time identified in press accounts as Samuel McDowell, was acquitted by a Florida jury in the strangulation murder of 26-year-old Patricia Ann Mount, whose body was discovered Sept. 12, 1982.

He was never brought to trial in the three Mississippi cases, which include the strangulation death of Melinda LaPree, 24, on Sept., 14 1982. That case has been reopened by the Pascagoula Police Department in light of new evidence, authorities said.

Little served limited prison time relative to his crimes and kept a step ahead of authorities by constantly moving among states. According to LAPD detectives, he had an arrest record in nearly every region of the continental U.S. except the north central states.

After avoiding convictions in the South, Little headed to California, where he lived in the mid- to late 1980s in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas.

He served more than two years in state prison after being convicted of assault and false imprisonment of two San Diego women in separate cases, police said. Shortly after being paroled, detectives say, he killed the three Los Angeles women.

His exact movements after leaving Southern California are not entirely clear, but detectives say they believe Little is responsible for further violent crimes, including murders.

“We believe he is good for many more crimes — including murders — throughout the United States,” Roberts said. “If any law enforcement agencies have similar killings that occurred between 1960 and the present, they should contact LAPD Cold Case Detectives.”

New Book Alleges Zodiac Killer Still Alive

and living in California

A new book claims that the infamous Zodiac killer is still alive and living in Northern California.

“The Zodiac Killer Cover Up” was written by a former California Highway Patrol officer, Lyndon Lafferty, and adds another theory to the much-discussed serial killer case in Northern California.

The  Zodiac killer is blamed for at least five slayings in 1968 and 1969. There was never an arrest in the case.

Three killings occurred in Vallejo. Teenagers David Farraday and Betty Lou Jensen were shot to death in December 1968. Darlene Ferrin, 22, was shot and killed seven months later at Blue Rock Springs Golf Club. Her companion, Michael Mageau, 19, survived.

In “The Zodiac Killer Cover Up,” Lafferty claims the killer is now a 91-year-old man living in Solano County. The book uses aliases and does not identify the alleged killer by name. Lafferty claims he and other lawmen investigated the suspect in the early 1970s but were stymied by “power brokers” in Solano County.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the book has stirred new debate among those who have followed the famous killings.

The San Francisco police formally closed the case in 2004. The Zodiac killer got his name by taunting newspapers and the police with letters and puzzles.

Zodiackiller.com is a great place for information if you are interested. It is updated often and has information, files, clippings and more that you can not find elsewhere on the net. Also, note that LAPD did not actually ‘close’ the case, they just are placing it as inactive. If there is a new lead I am sure they’d jump on it. Even the article linked above states that it is inactive.

“The case is being placed inactive,” said San Francisco Police Lt. John Hennessey, head of the department’s homicide unit.

“Given the pressure of our existing caseload and the amount of cases that remain open at this time, we need to be most efficient at using our resources,” he said.

“The police shall never catch me, because I have been too clever for them,” he wrote in a letter sent to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I enjoy needling the blue pigs,” he wrote. Detectives thought they might have had a break two years ago, when a partial DNA profile was taken from envelopes containing the letters.

The genetic evidence seemed to clear the only suspect ever named by police — Arthur Leigh Allen of Vallejo. Allen, who was never charged, died of a heart attack in 1992.

As the title suggests it is a conspiracy type book. I don’t think I am going to buy it but if I can down load it for free maybe. I have a hard time with most conspiracy theories, especially with this case. Too many people would have to be quiet for too long. They would risk their freedom, other people’s lives and on the other side there was reward money and other monies to be had.

25 States Considering Online Animal Abuser Registries

Lansing, MI – The Animal Legal Defense Fund is leading the campaign for online registries to list convicted animal abusers. Three New York counties, which have already approved the registries, will be the first in the nation to utilize them beginning May 7.  Twenty-five states in total have been considering similar laws since 2010.

Cotati, of the California based Legal Defense Fund, says a few of the other states considering similar bills include California, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas.

The bills being introduced throughout the country are meant to put animal abusers up for public scorn as well as notify the public of those involved in animal abuse/neglect.

Many backers of this legislation claim the bills recognize a growing awareness of animal rights, as well as the public safety benefits of stopping abusers. Many feel stopping animal abusers early is key as many studies have shown that animal abusers often go on to harming humans.

Representative Harvey Santana, of Michigan, says “There’s a mountain of evidence that says we need something like this. There is a strong correlation between people who abuse animals and graduate to abusing people.”

According to a 1997 study done by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA, a person who abuses or kills animals is five time more likely to commit violence against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes.  Serial killers who have abused or killed animals include the Boston strangler Albert Desalvo, ‘Son of Sam’ David Berkowitz and Carroll Edward Cole.

Stephen Wells, executive director of the fund, says “It’s frustrating to see repeat offenders commit these crimes and get away with it in the people’s eyes. The registries appeal to people’s common sense.”

Not all animal rights organizations agree or support the initiative.

According to Wayne Pacelle, chief executive of the Humane Society of the U.S., tracking abuse in FBI data would do more to prevent it. Pacelle continued by saying that many people involved in neglecting animals are mentally ill. “Shaming them with a public internet profile is unlikely to affect their future behavior,” says Pacelle. He believes it will only “isolate them further from society and promote increased distrust of the authority figures trying to help them.”

Stephanie Bell, associate director of cruelty investigations for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says PETA supports the use of registries stating “community members have a right to know when a convicted animal abuser is in their midst.  People who abuse animals rarely do so only once.”

Roy Gross, head of Suffolk County’s SPCA, administer of Suffolk Country’s registry, says “If you had a convicted animal abuser next to you, wouldn’t you want to know?”

I wrote about the link between violence and animal abuse not to long ago.

I do realise that this (if anyone in the general public can get the information) could cause problems for people with mental conditions, but it might also force some to get help. It might also prevent someone from hurting animals or people.

I think that we need to do something, whether it be the FBI tracking or some kind of notification to the public. I want to know that my pets are safe as well as knowing if my neighbors have a history of abuse of any kind.

Maybe they do not have to go so far as to make the records 100% public, maybe make it available to local law enforcement and fire departments? That way if a complain or questionable action happens (pets start to go missing for example) the police know where to maybe start to look?

I do think that they need to have a system for local shelters so that people who have abused in the past can not go adopt there. From there letting local law enforcement know would be easy and responsible.

How Many Serial Killers Are There?

I was in the process of trying to write an article about how many unknown monsters there are out there. Then I came across this article. Ms. Dimond says all that I wanted to say.

It was a small but horrifying item in the Los Angeles Times. “Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying what they call a ‘serious, dangerous serial killer operating in Orange County. Police believe one person is responsible for stabbing three middle-aged homeless men. He is (considered) extremely dangerous to the public.”
 
Another serial killer, I thought. And then the question: How many serial killers are out there in America?
 
John Douglas, a former chief of the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit and author of “Mind Hunter,” says, “A very conservative estimate is that there are between 35 and 50 active serial killers in the United States” at any given time. Often, Douglas told me, they will, “kill two to three victims and then have a ‘cooling-off’ period between kills.” That period can be days and in some cases (such as the BTK Strangler, Dennis Rader, convicted of killing 10 people from 1974 to 1991) even years.”
 
But others who study serial killers (defined as someone who kills three or more people) think there are many more of these demented predators out there than the FBI admits to — maybe as many as 100 of them actively operating right now.
 
Why don’t we know the exact figure? Because serial killers are a secretive and often nomadic bunch. Right before his execution in January 1989, the widely traveled Ted Bundy, described as a charismatic killer, admitted to 30 murders across half a dozen states — from Washington to Florida.
 
Andrew Cunanan killed at least five people during his wanderings through Minnesota, Illinois, New Jersey and Florida, including fashion designer Gianni Versace in Miami.
 
The FBI knows death travels, and five years ago it set up the Highway Serial Killings Initiative. The bureau reveals it has “a matrix of more than 600 victims and potential suspects in excess of 275.” Since the bodies were found off major highways, top suspects are long-haul truckers who may pick up prey in one state and dump the body several states away.
 
I know this is disturbing to read, and you may wonder: “Why should I care? I’m not going to hitchhike at a truck stop!”
 
Well, realize lots of serial killers stay close to home, and their victims are random. The aforementioned Rader found all his victims in Kansas not far from the Wichita home he shared with his wife and two kids. Rader, the president of his local church, knocked on his victim’s doors, and they simply let him in.
 
John Wayne Gacy met many of his 33 victims (all young men and boys) at charity events where he appeared dressed a clown. After luring them to his house and murdering them, he stuffed them under his Cook County, Ill., home. 
 
Gary Leon Ridgway, the so-called Green River Killer, was convicted of strangling 49 random women he met in Washington. He confessed to killing 71, but authorities believe the number of victims could be over 90.
 
Jeffrey Dahmer of Milwaukee admitted to killing and cannibalizing 17 young men and boys before he was arrested. Dahmer’s mother, Joyce, once told me her son wished doctors would come study him in prison to help figure out what drove him to do it.
 
We who write about crime are told that law enforcement nationwide is doing a better job of communicating with each other about suspected serial killers. Indeed, the item I read about the homeless murders was a milestone. In the past, detectives were loath to tell the public about a serial killer on the loose for fear of spooking people. Now, they’ve come to realize that knowledge is power, and citizens’ information can be a huge help in solving crimes.
 
Hardly a state in the union hasn’t had a serial killer. California, Texas and Florida seem to have more than their fair share. And mass graves have been found all around the country. Two examples: The 11 bodies of young women and an infant found on the isolated West Mesa outside Albuquerque, and an eerily similar case thousands of miles away in Long Island, N.Y., where authorities unearthed 10 bodies — eight women and a toddler, along with a man dressed in women’s clothes.
 
These are among the serial killer dumping grounds that have been found. Many others may go undetected forever. The best thing we can do is be vigilant. Know that many victims of serial killers put themselves in harm’s way. Most are women who have some contact with the sex trade or illegal drug underworld — and if they have children, they are in grave danger, too.
 
Dr. Maurice Godwin has studied serial killers for years, and one in-depth analysis of 107 of them revealed important information. Godwin found 55 percent of serial killers began having trouble in childhood and had criminal juvenile records. Forty-five percent had been convicted for a previous sex crime.
 
As with so many criminals, it goes back to their early formative years, and the best lesson we can learn is that when we find a troubled child, we best help them. Failure to do so could result in another serial killer walking among us.
