Cuffe Parade murder case: Mumbai Police fail to make headway

Mahima Sikand

MUMBAI: The police, probing the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl whose body was found floating in the sea near Maker Towers in Cuffe Parade, seem to have hit a dead end. The footage obtained from CCTVs installed in and around Maker Towers has not shed any light on the identity of the killer. Said a senior officer involved with the probe, said on Tuesday that the police had checked footage from the area from the time the victim went missing late last Wednesday till her body was discovered the next morning.

“We checked the footage closely, but couldn’t spot anyone coming and dumping the body in the sea.” We will check how the accused managed to go undetected,” he said.

Such a sad case. They might be looking at a family member (seems dad is most suspected) or family friend. I do not think that they have said for sure that this option has become a dead end.

Cuffe Parade murder: Killer removed bulb before abducting kid

Article

DNA / Preety Acharya / Saturday, April 21, 2012 8:00 IST

In the incident of rape and murder of the two-and-a-half Angel Sharma at Cuffe Parade, the killer apparently had the bulb in the house removed before kidnapping the baby, apparently to avoid detection.

Police are now taking fingerprints of Angel’s grandmother Rani, uncle Albert Fernandis, step-father Ashok Jadhav, grandfather James Fernandis and a few other neighbours. Confirming this, a officer from the the Cuffe Parade police said, “We are taking fingerprints of the people who had access to the child as well as those living close to the Fernandes home. We will match the fingerprints with those found on the bulb.”

The police suspect there is a big chance of some known person being involved in kidnapping the minor from her house. In fact, they interrogated Ashok and James for over 48 hours besides taking their DNA samples. Apart from checking the phone call records of all the male family members, the police have taken the DNA samples of nearly 20 other people, including relatives and neighbours. All 20 were first taken to the Colaba police and then to Nagpada police hospital before being taken to JJ Hospital for a medical check-up.

“As the child was raped, we will be checking for any matching of the DNA samples to identify the killer,” added the officer.

Mother of the deceased Suzan Sharma, however, has claimed harassment at the hands of the police. “I have already lost my daughter, and now the police are harassing me by not allowing my husband and father to go free. We don’t have an issue with the police collecting DNA samples as they are doing it for my daughter. But why torture my husband even before the results are out. On Thursday night, they beat up my father very badly,” she complained.

I have to wonder why they suspected the father, is it just because that does happen or was there another reason. Again, I don’t think this angle has been dismissed completley yet. I guess the DNA results will tell about the rape but not the kidnapping.

There are other reports that believe that there is a serial killer on the loose with 2 other little girls being murdered in the same way.

Joshua Patnigere

Mumbai : Having initially suspected the father of 3-year-old Angel Sharma for murdering her, officers part of the joint investigating team of the Colaba and Cuffe Parade Police on Saturday said the killer wanted for murdering two other girls in the area may be responsible for her murder as well.

Ambedkar Nagar resident Angel had gone missing from her house around 2 am on Thursday. Her body was found near the sea line close to Maker Tower L in Cuffe Parade around 8.30 am the same day. Post-mortem reports revealed that Angel had been raped and then strangled.

A joint team of officers from Colaba and Cuffe Parade police are probing the earlier murders of two minor girls from the area. The victims — Colaba resident Karishma Chavan and Cuffe Parade resident Jagruti Patel — were found dead near the Nariman Point Fire Brigade Depot. While Jagruti was found dead on November 13 last year, Karishma was found dead on January 18. Both girls were around three years old.

The police had said both murders could be the handiwork of the same person as the victims had died of a fatal blow to the head. However, no arrests have been made yet in either case.

An officer part of the investigation said there were many similarities in the cases. “Jagruti was kidnapped on October 20 and then killed. Karishma was found dead on January 18 and Angel was found murdered on April 19. The time between all three murders is nearly three months. This may not be a coincidence considering that the victims are all girls in the 3-4 age group,” said the officer.

The officer said, “All three victims either stayed with their grandmothers or were with them when they went missing. Jagruti stayed with her grandmother, but was with her parents on the fateful night. Karishma was kidnapped from Sassoon Docks in Colaba on January 17 when she was with her grandmother. Angel was kidnapped while she was sleeping next to her grandmother. There is a possibility that the killer prefers such victims,” the officer said, adding that the suspect may be a local.

However, the officer added that if the same killer was involved, he strayed from his pattern when murdering Angel.

“The first two victims died of head injuries but Angel was strangled. The first two bodies were found in a secluded spot, while Angel’s body was found near the sea. The killer may have strayed from his pattern because of police presence near the crime scene,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, the police sent Angel’s father along with several other suspects to seek their DNA tests.

Is it sad that I hope that it wasn’t the father? That I would actually think in my head, “please let it be anyone other than the parent”?

RIP little girls and I hope that this is sorted out soon and that the killer rapist of these children is brought to swift, painful justice.

Serial Killer Murdered Women on 9th of Every Month Arrested

Karachi

The police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a serial killer, who has allegedly killed two women and a girl after sexually assaulting them during the last few months.

He would dismember the bodies of his victims and dump the pieces in different parts of the city. The police also claimed that serial killer, Rafiq Soomro would commit his crimes on a particular date, the 9th of every month.

A rickshaw driver, Soomro picked his victims from roads as passengers and took them to his house in Patel Para, where he raped them before strangulating them to death. After the murder, he used a knife to cut the bodies into pieces.

SP Jamshed Town Abdul Salam said that they arrested Soomro during a raid in Darban Bazar in Patel Para. During the initial interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he kidnapped woman who traveled alone in his rickshaw . Soomro allegedly told the police that he, along with his friend Iqbal alias Puppu, first gang-raped the kidnapped women and then strangulated them. Then, they would cut their bodies into pieces, packed them in gunny bags and dumped them in various parts of the city.

The SP said that Soomro had admitted to killing one young girl in Sukkur and two women in Karachi. According to the suspect, he had dumped the body parts of the women in Jamshed Road, Grumandar, Soldier Bazar, Mazar-e-Quaid and MA Jinnah Road.

The SP said that Soomro hailed from Sukkur and had previously been arrested in a sexual harassment and murder case of a nine-year-old girl. One of Soomro’s victims was 39-year-old Nasreen. After murdering her, the suspect made a mistake – he made a call from the woman’s cell phone. It was then the police traced Soomro.

The police said the mother of five, a resident of Quaidabad, had been kidnapped by Soomro from Mazar-e-Quaid.The SP claimed that the alleged killer suffered from some psychological disorder as there was no apparent motive behind his crimes. Also, there is a pattern in the execution of murders - he killed the women on 9th of every month, the official said.

Commenting on the arrest of Soomro, the psychiatrists said people with “sadistic personalities” could commit such crimes just for thrill or pleasure. Dr Saeed Akhar, a renowned psychiatrist associated with a public psychiatric hospital in Karachi, said anti-social personality disorder could be one of the conditions in which a person could commit murders in a specific manner and pattern, like targeting a particular section of society.

But in most of the cases in Pakistan, such people commit crimes just for thrill and pleasure, to satisfy their sadistic desires and have no remorse on their acts,” he said, adding that the identification of such disorders was possible.

The expert was of the opinion that in societies where people had no fear for punishment, the rate of such crimes was high as criminals believed that they would get away with their acts of crime.

Another Psychiatrist and head of the JPMC’s psychiatry department Dr Iqbal Afridi was of the view that personality and psychotic disorders could lead a person to commit anti-social activities, including gruesome murders, but it was not difficult to diagnose such conditions.

“People become psychopath due to certain mental disorders, including the anti-social personality disorder or psychotic disorders, but that can be diagnosed easily with the help of tools and assessments,” he said, adding that the British law even described such mental conditions. According to him, the disorder was difficult to treat.

A Serial Predator Haunts Fayetteville, NC

Hiding in plain sight: A serial predator haunts Fayetteville, NC

By Maurice Godwin

Nested among pine trees Ramsey Street is dotted with townhouses, apartments and a number of nice subdivisions, where most enjoy a quite standard of living. The Ramsey Street area has seen a huge growth over the past 10 years primarily due to the recent influx of military personnel from the Defense Base Closure and Realignment (BRAC).

Ramsey Street is located in North Fayetteville. Some refer to Ramsey Street as 401 North or Raleigh Road. The road is the major artery that runs from Fayetteville to Lillington, NC and on to Raleigh, North Carolina. The area has some established businesses like Methodist University and the Goodyear tire plant but there have been a lot of new businesses which have opened in recent years.

With the transient population of military families moving in and out of the area many newcomers to Fayetteville are not always aware of past crimes in their neighborhoods. For example, between 1987 and 1999 there were seven murders of prostitutes in the Fayetteville/Cumberland County area. Another example are the over fifty unsolved murders in the Cumberland County/Fayetteville area since the late 1970s. Like most murder cases the crimes make the local headlines and are the focus of police investigators but then disappear from the headlines. The lack of continued media pressure and police not publicly talking about unsolved crimes allows violent predators to hide in plain sight while committing more crimes.

Has a serial predator been targeting women for years on Ramsey Street?

In 2010 seven women reported rapes and sexual assaults in the Fayetteville area. A number of the crimes occurred near Glenwick Drive and Radford Road. The attacks were similar. Also, between 2006 and 2008, a series of five rapes or attempted rapes were reported along Ramsey Street. The rapes to date have not been solved. Police investigators indicated early on that they didn’t see any links between the attacks.

Sometime on the evening of March 31, 2012 around 9:00 p.m. a lady was jogging in a wooded area off Carvers Falls Road near Ramsey Street when she was attacked and raped. The crime remains unsolved.

In the early morning hours on Saturday April 14, 2012 Kelli Bordeaux, 23, left the Froggy Bottoms bar, which is located at 6326 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville. She has not been seen or heard from since. Pfc. Bordeaux is a combat medic with the 44th Medical Brigade at Ft. Bragg, NC.

The distance between Carvers Falls Road and the Froggy Bottoms bar where Pfc. Bordeaux was last seen is approximately  0.7 tenths of a mile.

Bordeaux remains missing.

Has a serial predator been hiding in plain sight?

Note: This article is not about the Kelli Bordeaux case. Rather, the article’s purpose is to point out that there has been a violent predator operating in the Ramsey Street area for a number of years.

If you or someone who you know lives in this area be very aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to cars parked or driving, pay attention to faces, and pay attention to your neighbors. Notice if someone you normally see is not around and report it to the police.

Even if there is not a serial predator being a little more aware and keeping an eye on your neighbors is never a bad thing.

Serial Killer Robert Ben Rhoades

A Texas trucker who kept a torture dungeon in the cab of his long-haul rig has avoided the death penalty by accepting life prison sentences for murdering a hitchhiking couple two decades ago.

Robert Ben Rhoades, who already is serving a life sentence for killing a 14-year-old girl in Illinois, pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder when he appeared before a West Texas judge this week. He has no chance of parole.

Yeah, but he can escape, torture then kill other inmates, prison workers and all other kinds of things. Maybe, like Richard Speck, he can make a video while doing coke, growing boobs and having sex with another prisoner?

Oops, sorry about the rant. It’s all true but came out a bit harsh. Oh well.

Described by authorities as a sadistic killer, Rhoades was charged with the 1990 abductions and slayings of newlyweds Douglas Scott Zyskowski, 28, and Patricia Walsh, 24. Authorities said the couple left Seattle in November 1989, and were hitchhiking to Georgia to preach the Christian gospel when they accepted a ride from Rhoades near El Paso.

Zyskowski’s body was found in January 1990 along Interstate 10 east of Ozona, about 500 kilometres east of El Paso. He’d been shot, and his body wasn’t identified until 1992. The remains of his wife were found in October 1990 by deer hunters in central Utah, but they weren’t identified until 13 years later by dental records.

Police believed Rhoades held the woman captive for about a week, systematically torturing and assaulting her before shooting her several times.

Rhoades was initially charged in Utah with her death, but he was later extradited to Texas where authorities said the kidnappings took place. Prosecutors in Ozona said they would seek the death penalty, but his trial was repeatedly delayed since 2009.

Under the plea agreement accepted Monday, the life prison sentences in Texas would keep him behind bars if he somehow gets out of prison in Illinois.

See what I mean?!?!?!?!?

The 66-year-old also agreed to waive any rights to appeals and parole. It’s unclear whether he’ll stay in a Texas prison or be returned to Illinois.

Investigations continue

FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap in Houston said agents couldn’t comment on the case because investigations involving Rhoades are continuing. District Attorney Laurie English was not available Thursday, and messages left with Rhoades’s lawyers were not immediately returned.

Rhoades’s Illinois conviction stems from the abduction and slaying of Regina Walters, a 14-year-old runaway from Pasadena, Texas. She disappeared in February 1990 with an 18-year-old boyfriend who told friends they planned to hitchhike to Mexico.

Her body was found months later at an abandoned farm near Greenville, Ill. Her companion has never been located.

By the time Walters’ remains were found, Rhoades was in custody — after authorities discovered what was inside his truck.

A state trooper near Casa Grande, Ariz., stopped on I-10 to check on a tractor-trailer with blinking lights in April 1990. He discovered Rhoades inside the cab with a hysterical naked woman who had been chained and shackled to a wall.

She later told investigators that she’d been tortured and whipped, that Rhoades told her he was known as “Whips and Chains” and had been involved in such activity for years.

Houston police found another woman who’d managed to escape from Rhoades and told a similar story of torture. FBI agents called into the case searched his Houston apartment and found torture devices and photos of a teenage girl handcuffed and shackled and in various poses at a barn. The girl subsequently was identified as Walters, who had been strangled with baling wire attached to a piece of lumber.

Rhoades was convicted and sentenced in Arizona on aggravated assault, sexual assault and unlawful imprisonment charges stemming from the woman being held in his truck, then was charged with the Illinois slaying. He pleaded guilty.

Zimbabwean Serial Killer Slices and Dices Self

Zimbabwean murderer slices-off own penis with razor in Botswana

A ZIMBABWEAN man has sliced-off his private parts into pieces with a sharp razor blade, while in police custody in Botswana awaiting murder trial, it has been reported.

Cleopus Nkomo aged 27 incarcerated in a Botswana high security prison is a suspected rapist and serial killer facing four murder charges.

Bleeding profusely, Nkomo was rushed to Nyangabwe Referral Hospital where a surgeon sewed-back the pieces of his penis which were picked up by prison warders. However, some parts including the testicles are said to have gone missing.

They do not pay the warders enough.

He is now in a serious condition in hospital after attempting to commit suicide by slashing his penis into pieces.

Nkomo who for years masqueraded as a prophet sliced-off his penis while he was at the prison clinic where he was admitted after complaining of medical problems. He is said to have slashed-off his penis into pieces in the prison clinic toilet where he had gone to relieve himself.

He was due to appear in court for the killings of Omponye Phetso, Tidimalo Jameson and Lebelelang Tabengwa together with her seven month old toddler in 2010.

Nkomo is under guard in Nyangabwe  hospital in Francistown.

While the Public relations officer for Botswana prisons, Wamorena Ramolefhe was not ready with an official comment at the time of going to press, inside sources confirmed that the man used a razor blade he somehow had in his possession. He was attending the prison clinic where he had been admitted complaining of illness.

Nyangabwe Public relations officer Caiphus Gabana confirmed the bizarre incident. He said, “From what I can gather some of the parts were missing, but the surgeon who attended the patient tried to put together the pieces though the man was critically injured. It’s just unbelievable he did all this to himself.”

The officer said the prisoner was currently at the male surgical ward where his condition was being monitored. He said, “The prison officers who brought him in said that he tried to commit suicide. It is still very difficult to comment about his condition, but I understand the man’s private parts were severely damaged.”

Suicide by penis mutilation. ?

I hope it hurts like Hell.

I also hope that they can not actully save it so that it functions. Rapists do not need working sex organs.

He killed a 7 month old.

I have no sympathy for him.

Serial Killer Joseph Naso’s Rape Diary

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A diary documenting rapes and sexual assaults of underage girls and women was found along with posed photographs of two Northern California slaying victims in the home of a suspected serial killer, a homicide detective testified Wednesday.

Nevada Department of Public Safety Det. Richard Brown, the lead investigator on the case, made the disclosure during a preliminary hearing for Joseph Naso, a Reno, Nev., man charged in the “Double Initial” killings.

Naso, 78, is acting as his own lawyer in what is likely to be a death penalty case. The former photographer has pleaded not guilty to four murder charges involving slayings of prostitutes the 1970s and 1990s.

Being his own lawyer worked out what I consider right for Bundy. Let us hope Naso is just as successful.

Girl in north Buffalo woods. She was real pretty. Had to knock her out first,” read one entry in Naso’s journal. Brown said the journal was filled with such descriptions, and that Naso used the word rape in other sections.

White-haired and wearing leg shackles, Naso sat alone at the courtroom defense table with his head rested on his hand.

Was he bord? Such a shame that he is allowed to express such disrespect for the victims and the proceedings.

Naso listened as Marin County prosecutor Dori Ahana and Brown detailed dozens of sexual and violent photographs of women seized from his home, objecting at times to the relevance. The photographs showed many women unconscious or appearing dead, including two prostitutes Naso is charged with killing, Pamela Parsons and Tracy Tafoya.

“Who is paying for all of this entertainment?” Naso asked after hours of detailed testimony about the photos. “This is my private work, my photography. The women have been violated. What happens in a home is sacred and private. … The whole thing is disgusting, and I don’t see the relevance at all.”

At this point I can only yell at the screen. They found pictures of the dead woman. What the hell does he mean private and without relevance? That comment about entertainment is sickening.

Judge Andrew Sweet overruled Naso’s objection.

For stupidity I hope.

In one photograph of Parsons, Brown said she appeared to be dead.

“I thought she was deceased. Her face doesn’t appear natural,” he said, describing the picture.

Other photographs taken of the lower halves of women appeared to show the reddish-purple discoloration of the skin seen in dead people, Brown said.

In a bedroom in Naso’s home, investigators also found a “List of 10″ that contained scrawled descriptions of 10 women, including four references that prosecutors believe described murder victims — Roxene Roggasch, 18, Carmen Colon, 22, Parsons, 38, and Tafoya, 31.

The matching letters of each woman’s first and last names gave rise to the “Double Initial” moniker for the case. Six other women referred to on the list have not yet been identified, but prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing.

That is a very disturbing part that so many had the double initials. He did research on his victims, he knew them (or about them) well enough to at least know their names.

The preliminary hearing is providing the first in-depth look at the prosecution’s case against Naso and his lifestyle. At the end, the judge will determine if prosecutors have enough evidence to take Naso to trial.

Evidence like photos of the dead women when they already appear to be dead? Notations that match the killings? Personal items from the murdered women? Evidence like that?

Authorities seized thousands of documents, calendars, ledgers, journals and photographs from Naso’s house. In two safety deposit boxes, Naso kept $152,400 in cash, along with news clippings covering the slayings of Parsons and Tafoya, and other personal items from women.

Nevada probation Officer Wesley Jackson testified that he arrived in April 2010 to check Naso’s Nevada home for violations of his probation agreement and found food rotting on the kitchen counter and debris strewn about.

All the bedrooms were locked, and Jackson said Naso resisted opening them for a time.

In Naso’s bedroom, Jackson said, he found mannequin parts and a full mannequin clad in a red dress. Women’s lingerie was in the dresser drawers. In his garage, suitcases were found packed with mannequin legs clad in hosiery.

Further searches of the home turned up a box of knives and guns hidden behind a refrigerator in Naso’s garage, authorities said. Naso was forbidden to have weapons due to probation from a felony larceny conviction in California.

Parsons’ strangled body was found in the Yuba City area of Northern California in 1993, where Naso was living at the time with his mentally ill son. Court documents state that Naso had photographed Parsons.

A 1993 calendar Naso kept had an entry for Sept. 15, Brown said, that placed him in the area.

“Stayed in (Yuba City) all day long. Took care of some old business,” Brown read from the calendar. “September 15 was the last time Parsons was known to be alive.”

Tafoya was killed in the area when Naso lived in Yuba City. Her body was found on the side of Highway 70 near Marysville Cemetery in 1994.

In a calendar entry on Aug. 6, 1994, Naso referred to meeting with a woman in Marysville near the time of Tafoya’s death.

“Picked up a nice broad in (Marysville). 4 p.m. She came over for four hours. Took photographs. Nice legs. She ripped me off,” Brown read, adding: “That’s the last date Tracy Tafoya was known to be alive.”

Investigators have said Naso might have used his then-wife’s panty hose to strangle Roggasch, a prostitute whose 1977 murder went unsolved for decades.

Circumstantial evidence but still compelling evidence.

Colon’s decomposed body was found near Port Costa 1978 by a California Highway Patrol officer in Contra Costa County. Authorities have said DNA evidence collected from her fingernails could tie Naso to her slaying.

I hope that they get the results back soon.

Authorities previously said Naso was being investigated for possible links to New York’s “Double Initial Murders” of three girls in the early 1970s.

However, no charges have been filed.

Source Wall Street Journal

Naso is now claiming that the book is just fantasies and that the word rape means nothing more than making out.

Seriously.

During his cross-examination of Brown Thursday morning, Naso, who is representing himself in the case, asked Brown why he had called it that.

Brown answered, “Because your writings say ‘I had to rape her,’ and ‘I raped her in the front seat of the car.’”

Naso responded, “That, in my culture, refers to making out,” drawing gasps of disbelief from some in the courtroom.

“I use that term loosely. It’s just a fantasy,” Naso said.

If there were not victims this would actually be funny.

Gregory Miley Agrees to 3 Year Continuance

Realizing that parole would be denied, “Freeway Killer” accomplice Gregory Matthew Miley agreed to a three-year continuance of his request until 2014.

The 50-year-old is serving a 25 years to life prison sentence in Corcoran for the kidnappings, sexual assaults and murders of two boys in Orange and Los Angeles counties in 1980. The boys were two of the 14 murder victims pinned to William Bonin, the first inmate to die by lethal injection in California.

Gregory Matthew Miley could have (IMO Should Have!) received the death penalty for his role in the kidnappings, sexual assaults and murders of two boys in Orange and Los Angeles counties the morning of Feb. 3, 1980. But because Miley helped put away “Freeway Killer” William Bonin the then-18-year-old was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas opposed the now 50-year-old Miley’s parole on grounds that he remains a “significant threat to public safety” as proven by the circumstances of the murders and multiple prison rules violations.

A sadistic Vietnam War veteran out of Downey, Bonin spent most of the seventies behind bars for sex attacks on young men. He was paroled in 1978 and got a truck driving job in Montebello.

Parole for serial criminals, especially those that are sexually motivated and / or violent needs to stop.

For the next two years, Bonin would pick up young male hitchhikers, sexually assault them, strangle them to death and leave their bodies along Southern California freeways. Bonin often used sadistic young helpers, one of whom was Miley.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 1980, Bonin was driving his van with Miley aboard when they picked up 14-year-old Charles Miranda near the Starwood Ballroom in West Hollywood. They drove several blocks, parked, and then Bonin sodomized Miranda. Miley tried to do the same, but he was unable to sustain an erection. Bonin and Miley then tied Miranda’s hands and feet together, Bonin grabbed Miranda’s shirt, put it around the boy’s neck, and began twisting the shirt to suffocate him. Miley then held the shirt while Bonin picked up an iron bar, wrapped it in the shirt and twisted it until the victim suffocated to death. Miranda’s body was dumped in a downtown Los Angeles alley before the killers drove on to Huntington Beach.

Later that same morning, they lured into the death van 12-year-old JamesMcCabe, who was walking to Disneyland. As Miley drove, Bonin sexually assaulted McCabe. Once the van was parked, Bonin and Miley murdered McCabe by holding him down and twisting a shirt around the victim’s neck until he suffocated to death. McCabe’s body was placed in a dumpster in the city of Walnut.

It is not like he was uninvolved,  just kept his mouth shut. No, he was an active participant in the murders and would have been in the rapes as well if he could have kept it up. I am betting it was drugs that stopped him from being able to get an erection not the horror of their actions! He should have gotten the same as Bonin.

Why would we let this man out ever?

Miley was living in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 22, 1980, when, during a recorded phone conversation with a friend, he admitted to participating in the sexual assaults and murders of the two victims. Miley waived extradition on charges of murdering Miranda and McCabe, plus two counts of robbery and one count of sodomy.

During the latter months of his killing spree, Bonin was under police surveillance as some of his other accomplices had ratted him out to save their own skins. One, Vernon Butts, chose to hang himself in jail. Bonin was sentenced to death in 1982 for 10 LA County murders, and he received the ultimate penalty again the next year for four other Orange County killings. Bonin later told a television reporter his actual body count was 21.

Butts did the right thing, Miley should have followed his lead.

On Nov. 22, 1983–Miley was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for the Orange County murder. However, he was allowed to serve the time concurrently with his previous LA County conviction, also first-degree murder.

According to an OCDA statement, Miley has racked up 26 prison rules violations, including nine serious violations for threats against an inmate, sexual behavior for attempting to engage in non-consensual sodomy, refusal to report and remain in school, possession of unauthorized medication, renting out property to another inmate, failure to report, failure to comply with grooming standards, and responsibility for counts.

Because Miley cannot follow rules in a controlled environment, the OCDA reasons he won’t be able to once outside, making him a threat to the community. His drug use and the ugly nature of his crimes don’t hold out much hope either.

I do not understand why we would ever even consider releasing a child killing serial criminal who can not even control himself in prison. He has tried to rape other prisoners for crying out loud. That should have added time to his current sentence and made him unable to be on parole forever.

That being said the charade of the hearings should also be stopped. The only thing that comes from these hearing are the cost to the general public, the poking at wounds for the family members and the killer getting extra attention from the board, lawyers and others that are attending the hearing.

Tax payers should not be paying for hearings that are just for show. Families should not have to deal with the trauma that this has to drag up every time there is a hearing when it is just for show.  The monster should not be allowed to put on his performance in front of the audience when there is nothing that can really be gained or lost.

Parole Denied for New Zealand Serial Killer

A man labelled New Zealand’s first serial killer who killed two prostitutes and a massage parlour boss in Auckland in 1996 is on the verge of having his prison security risk reduced but won’t be released any time soon.

Hayden Poulter admitted raping and killing prostitute Natacha Hogan in October 1996 and confessed to stabbing sex worker Ladda Nimphet and her boss Herbert Richard Norris on the same night later that year.

Poulter, a 35-year-old labourer at the time of the murderers, became eligible for parole this month after being jailed for at least 15 years in 1997.

He told police that his second personality “Hell” drove him to commit the murders and also the attempted murder of another sex worker Angkana Chaisamret.

He still blames drugs and “Hell” for the murders. That means that he can not have real remorse.  He is still lessening his role, what he did. It means that he is also still lying.

Dissociative identity disorder is extremely rare and it comes with other signs and symptoms This sounds like he took a page from Kenneth Bianchi’s book.

His murders were violent brutal acts that according to Judge Carruthers had “marked aspects of planning”. These were not drug crazed murders. They were the murders of a predator.

At his first appearance before the parole board via video conference last month Poulter said he was deeply remorseful and sad about what had happened and that he felt strongly for the families of his victims.

Judge David Carruthers said the board has been told that Poulter was assessed as a low-medium security risk in prison and that was due to be downgraded to minimum.

Poulter, now 50, had gained a university qualification in prison and some of his artwork sold on online auction site TradeMe last month.

He admitted being a drug addict after undergoing a drug treatment programme and was now mentoring others on the programme. He was due to undertake a sex offenders treatment programme.

It is very easy for serial criminals to behave in custody. The schedules, the fact that they know that they are being watched and the fact that the possibility of future freedom will be based on their actions all lend to how they behave. It also allows them to learn to manipulate others better.

Look at Arthur Shawcross or Edmund Kemper. Both had been convicted of serious and violent crimes but did well in custody.  Of course once released they killed again and again.

Judge Carruthers said despite Poulter being offered a place to stay by a supporter upon his eventual release and doing well in prison he would not be granted parole any time soon.

That is a scary thought. How would you like to find out that your neighbor befriended a serial killer and they are going to let them move in?

“We have been at pains to tell him that that must be regarded as it is some distance away,” he said in the decision.

“There is no question that he cannot be released on parole.”

Why is it so hard to tell him that it will be a long while off? He is a killer.

Poulter will go before the board again in a year’s time.

Hopefully they keep him locked up for a very long time.

FBI to Search Lake for Ray’s Murder Victim

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Investigators think he could be one of the worst serial killers ever in New Mexico. Problem is, they’ve never found any bodies to prove it. But now the FBI says new tips, and the drought, have prompted a new search of Elephant Butte Lake.

David Parker Ray‘s toy box is infamous; his Butte trailer home was a little slice of hell, filled with sinister devices he used to rape and torture women. But there may be another place ray used to keep his victims.

FBI agents will search Elephant Butte Lake again next week, all on a new tip that Ray’s forgotten victims will be found. The FBI isn’t talking except to say it has new information, and a chance now with the drought to search caves and ravines once covered by water.

Ray was arrested in 1999 after a woman wearing just a dog collar and padlocked chains escaped his house of horrors he called his toy box, full of torture devices he called his friends.

He was convicted of kidnapping and sexually torturing three women, all of whom lived to tell their stories. From the start investigators have suspected he was a serial killer.

In 2002, shortly after Ray was sentenced to life, he dropped dead of a heart attack in prison. After his death police released audio tapes he played for his captives, where he hinted he was a serial killer.

“I’ve tortured girls in ways that I’m not very proud of. When I’m p***ed off, I don’t mind having blood all over the place, and sometimes they didn’t survive,” Ray says on the audiotape.

Investigators also found Ray’s diary in his home with a timeline of his abductions dating back to 1955, when he was just a teenager.

Investigators believe Ray may have killed up to 60 people. Ray’s girlfriend Cindy Hendy helped kidnap and torture the women. She accidentally left a set of keys out, that’s how the woman escaped, bringing Ray’s reign of terror to an end. Cindy Hendy is serving 36 years in prison.

Full Story

I do wonder if Hendy is trying to cut some new deals or get privileges. I doubt the police are just now acting on her previous statements. It does sound as if the leads that they were following fell through though.

No bodies were found during a search of a reservoir for possible victims of a man known as the Toy Box Killer, convicted a decade ago of kidnapping and sexually torturing women.

FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said federal and local law enforcement agents searched a canyon in New Mexico for three hours on Tuesday but found only animal bones.

“We plan to come back in the near future to do a more thorough search of a few points there,” Fisher told The Times. “There are some areas we want to take our time with.”

About 30 people fanned out on the southern end of Elephant Butte Reservoir on Tuesday after authorities received information about possible remains of the missing victims of David Parker Ray.

Authorities have long believed that Ray, who died behind bars in 2002 while serving a life sentence, chose the reservoir as a burial site for some of the 40 people he claimed to have killed.

None of the bodies have been found there, however.

New Mexico police suspect that the remains of 22-year-old Jill Troia, who disappeared in 1995, may be buried near the reservoir in southern New Mexico, about 150 miles south of Albuquerque.

Ray wrote that he sexually tortured his victims in the trailer he dubbed his “toy box” in the New Mexico town of Truth or Consequences, within view of the reservoir, Fisher said. Ray said he then buried his victims, including an Asian woman investigators believe may have been Troia.

Ray was arrested in 1999 after a naked woman fled from his home wearing only a dog collar and chain.

The woman told police Ray had tortured her. Investigators who searched his home found a “Satan’s Den” sign on the wall, skull-shaped candelabra, surgical tools, video cameras, a makeshift coffin and a black box he apparently used to cover victims’ heads when he tortured them, the Daily Mailreported.

In 2001, Ray pleaded guilty to kidnapping and rape charges in the case of the woman who had fled his home; he was also convicted of kidnapping and torturing a Colorado woman.

Ray’s girlfriend at the time of his arrest, Cynthia Lea Hendy, told police that Ray disposed of bodies in Elephant Butte Reservoir. Hendy was sentenced 11 years ago to 36 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to accessory and kidnapping charges, and agreed to cooperate with investigators to avoid a life sentence. She remains in prison, Fisher said.

Troia was last seen in October 1995 at a restaurant in Albuquerque with Ray’s daughter, Glenda Jean Ray, whom she had dated. Albuquerque police have long believed Ray and his daughter were connected to Troia’s disappearance, which remains the Albuquerque Police Department’s only known cold case related to Ray. But neither was ever charged in connection with the case.

In 2001, Glenda Jean Ray pleaded no contest to kidnapping charges and was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison, plus five years of probation in connection with her father’s sex torture case. She was later released, Fisher said.

Fisher said authorities are reopening other missing persons cases from the same time period to see if they might be connected to Ray. A new missing persons DNA database could help identify remains, he said.

I would think that decomposition in that type of condition (lake in the desert) would be quick and pretty complete. I wonder what would / could be left after all this time?

Family member sees ‘justice’ differently

I noted the Rev. Jeremy Tobin’s description of the justice system (“Poor, minorities paying price of ‘justice’,” Oct. 2 letter).

I thought I would offer another view – one from a victim’s family member perspective. The convicted serial killer in my own case murdered seven women in Louisiana.

Tobin states that our justice system “is built to round up black men, transfer public funds to private companies to warehouse them, and then kill them.”

This is quite different from my experience whereby serial murderer Derrick Lee was represented at trial by three very competent attorneys, one a Millsaps graduate.

As a result of overwhelming evidence – including seven bodies with his DNA, an eyewitness, and other forensic evidence – he was convicted and sentenced to death by a multiracial jury.

It is not true as Tobin says that offenders who are “well represented at trial do not get the death penalty.” Moreover, Lee is being housed at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, a state rather than a private institution.

Though Lee’s conviction has been upheld twice already at the level of the U.S. Supreme Court, Louisiana and Mississippi both allow for what is called post-conviction relief (whenever I use that term, I always pause to appreciate the utter irony of that nomenclature), which is yet another set of appeals allowed in capital cases, even those with overwhelming forensic evidence for guilt.

I will go again to Louisiana District Court on Wednesday as I have for years for yet another hearing whereby the defense attorney Gary Clements – out to “score more wins” as Tobin says the prosecutors do -files endless specious claims on behalf of his serial killer client. The post conviction process allows Clements to hijack the legal system, contrary to a rational application of the law.

To me it appears to be a clear case of defense attorneys failing to care at all about the human or fiscal cost of their actions, failing to value honor or justice for the dead, and – in my experience – contempt for the families of those who died at the hands of killers.

Here I have to agree with Tobin; our justice system is “anything but reasonable.” Were it reasonable in cases where DNA – which is considered absolute proof by the Innocence Project – is available, the obvious would be accepted. There is no logic for post-conviction appeals in such cases.

The post-conviction process should be congruent with scientific fact. Good science is the best certainty for justice for all of us – regardless of ethnicity or sex or income level.
